SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The streets were soggy in Sioux Falls Wednesday, but it’s time to prepare for when they turn snowy.

When winter weather hits, Sioux Falls city crews will be out with sander trucks and plows.

Depending on the conditions, the city may call a snow alert, which is curb-to-curb plowing on all public streets.

“It’s typically that average of around 3-4 inches of snow we’ll really start to think about calling a snow alert, but potentially we could have back-to-back events where we have 2 inches, 2 inches, and that third event we might have another inch or so, we might actually call on there,” Sioux Falls Street Operations Manager Dustin Hansen said.

If a snow alert is called, make sure you’re not parked on the street when crews are working in your neighborhood.

“We immediately ticket and tow on emergency snow routes. There’s no leeway on that. On the secondary routes we initially ticket and that gives them a little bit of an opportunity to get off the roadway, but then eventually we do circle back around and begin towing,” Sioux Falls Police Lt. Andrew Siebenborn said.

It’s also important to keep the sidewalks clear of snow and ice.

And don’t forget about the curb ramps.

Property owners have 48 hours after the snow stops to get to work.

“Many people in our community utilize public sidewalks for their main source of transportation. It’s pretty easy to jump in your car, but think about the people who walk to and from work every day, maybe walk the dog after work to get some exercise,” Sioux Falls Property Maintenance Inspections Manager Justin Christensen said.

Be sure to clear the snow around fire hydrants and create a path to your mailbox too.
