A Westwood man is facing criminal charges after he’s accused of giving amphetamines to his monkey.Prosecutor Joe Deters said this is a case that has several of his colleagues wearing buttons with the phrase “Justice for Neo.” That’s the name of Adam Kordes’ companion animal, a capuchin monkey.Animal control officers got a tip in February that the 24-year-old Kordes had given Neo illicit drugs.Deters said blood tests confirmed Neo had amphetamines in his system. Deters said photos show Neo before the monkey underwent rehab in Indiana and got cleaned up.Kordes was charged in 2017 with aggravated vehicular homicide but was found competent to stand trial. As a result, Kordes is not supposed to own any guns, but Deters said investigators found a shotgun in Kordes’ possession. So now, he’s accused of both animal cruelty and having a weapon illegally.”The animal people went in initially and saw a lot of drugs and a lot of guns. They went back and this guy, apparently he’s not too incompetent to clean up the apartment, because he did,” Deters said. “When they went back with the other search warrant to get the monkey, the seizure of the monkey, all they had was a shotgun left. But that’s enough.”Kordes is set to be arraigned on Thursday. Deters said Neo is thriving at an undisclosed location in Florida.
