Westbound lanes of Interstate 70 reopened Tuesday afternoon after closures had been put in place for about an hour near mile marker 116 in West Glenwood Springs as a result of three small brush fires.
Only one right lane closed during the course of the fire. Glenwood Fire reported to CBS4 that the burning was contained by 1:30 pm. All lanes were reopened shortly after 3 pm.
The fires burned about 1 acre. No evacuations were ordered, officials said.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found three individual fires spaced a quarter-mile apart, burning in grass and brush on the north side of I-70. Firefighters immediately began extinguishment efforts,” a Tuesday night press release from the Glenwood Springs Fire Department said. “On the westernmost fire, firefighters were joined by local passersby who contributed to extinguishment efforts with the use of their fire extinguishers.”
Sparks from vehicle chains started the fire, according to the Tuesday press release.
