Chicagoans should bundle up or simply not go outside this weekend, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Doom.
“Today and tomorrow are going to be very similar. We’re expecting highs in the lower 20s both days,” Doom said Saturday morning. “Wind chills in the morning will be in the single digits, and then in the afternoon they’ll be maybe around 10 degrees.”
A storm system will be coming across central Illinois Sunday and Monday, bringing a really healthy amount of snow to parts of central Illinois, Doom said. But Chicago is going to miss out.
However, it’s possible that Chicago will receive some lake-effect snow Sunday night and Monday.
“We’re not going to see much snow directly from that system as it works across central Illinois, but sort of an aftereffect will be the lake effect that will then dump some snow on Chicago.”
This weekend will be just a little bit cooler than the average Chicago weekend this time of year, Doom said. The average high temperatures in the city in early January are in the upper 20s.
Going outside on the weekend is unavoidable for many people. Since the wind is “going to be a factor,” folks should wear things to protect themselves from the wind, like a windbreaker jacket, Doom said.
“If you don’t have to be outside in this type of cold, I’d recommend not being outside, especially for prolonged periods,” he added.
