SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Monday’s weather has been a mixed bag.
We’ve seen everything from rain to sleet to snow and wind.
The weather has altered a lot of people’s travel plans. And while a lot of people chose to stay home, that’s not an option for truckers.
Kevin Hutto is a truck driver for Hogan Company out of Kansas.
He says the roads were fine where he’s been just northeast of Sioux Falls.
“They are wet and there are little slick spots so you have to keep an eye on where you’re going,” Hutto said.
But Hutto’s company is playing it safe for other drivers.
“Yeah earlier today my company shut down all of our empty trailers out west because the wind is starting to gust up to around 60 mph and it’s not expected to get a whole lot better out there so it’s time to move away from the west side of the state,” Hutto said.
Chris Lowe is a truck driver from Omaha. He has some advice for anyone wanting to travel. Do it early.
“Be cautious driving you know, you might lose a little bit of visibility, but other than that they aren’t slippery yet,” Lowe said.
Most of the drivers we talked with Monday say they’re keeping one eye on the road and the other on the weather, because they know it’ll probably be changing and that’s why they are trying to stay ahead of it.
“I was waiting to see if I was going to take 34 hours off and hang out up here, but if I did that the next couple of days it’s not supposed to get much over-freezing, so I don’t want to get caught if there’s any ice out there,” Hutto said.
So they say the sooner they can get on the road the safer they’ll feel.
“I’m ready to go back, ready to be back in Omaha, I’ll tell you that much,” Lowe said.
