Merry Christmas and Happy first night of Hanukkah Central Indiana. Unfortunately, the weather is not ideal for the holidays, with no snow and above-average temperatures. It felt and looked more like a soggy late fall or early spring day around here. As forecast, it was not a big rain today, but it marked the 66th Christmas Day since 1871 to have measurable rain at the Indianapolis International Airport.

The lingering showers we have this evening will get out of here around Midnight or so. Some drizzle and fog is likely overnight and to open Thursday, too. The foggy conditions will be around for the next several mornings throughout this mild stretch. High temperatures Thursday will be a bit warmer than Christmas Day with many spots hitting 50°.

Turning rainy and warmer again for the weekend

Mother Nature says our mild stretch of weather is not done yet, as highs well above normal are in the cards for the final weekend of 2024. Winds will turn southerly Friday and give us a surge in temperatures. Forecast highs Friday well into the 50s with upper 50s (perhaps 60° in spots) on Saturday. Highs at these levels are normal for late October or early November.

Our next rainmaker comes with that surge in temperatures. By Friday late morning and afternoon, we’ll likely have a period of moderate to briefly heavy rain at times. See the latest Futurecast imagery below.

Next week starts dry but comes with indications that this mild stretch will begin to break down. Highs Monday will remain in the 50s and that may be the next time we see the sun. A more organized area of low pressure is expected to move through our neck of the woods on Tuesday or Wednesday next week. This low will be the catalyst of ending our mild stretch, giving us some rain and maybe even a few snow showers in the process.

New Year’s Eve Tuesday looks to have rain and will be the last mild day. By New Year’s Day Wednesday, our forecast has highs in the 30s (near normal for this time of the year) with snow showers possible. Entering 2025, slightly below normal temperatures are favored. Stay tuned and happy holidays!
