SIOUX FALLS S.D. (KELO) — An offender serving two life sentences at the Sioux Falls prison has died.

A news release from the Department of Corrections says Steven Satter was serving two life terms for second degree murder in Codington County. Satter was 77. Satter had multiple appeals to the State Supreme Court. All were denied.

KELOLAND News’ Nancy Sutton covered Satter’s escape from the state prison in 1977. Video shows officers locating and returning him to the prison.

Satter escaped the Sioux Falls Penitentiary in July of 1977 and was on the run for eight days with two other prisoners. Satter was found at a gas station near Madison when he stopped to buy a pop. The clerk then called officials and was taken back to custody. Satter said to officials “thanks for the ride” upon his return to Sioux Falls.

The Lake County Sheriff at the time said Satter was “just plain tired and hungry.”

Satter is the third inmate to die in DOC custody this year.
