Instead, they will only be able to seek asylum through Europe.In 2022, the United States government announced the expectation to receive 100,000 Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.So far, Ukrainian advocates say over 20,000 refugees have made it to the United States through the Mexican-American border due to the Biden Administration excusing Ukrainians from Title 42 – a Trump-era public health order that has largely blocked migrants from entering the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic. “100,000 Ukrainians, they still want to come to the United States and we’re telling them right now ‘please stay in Europe, it will be easier for you to get to the U.S.,'” said Vlad Fedoryshyn, a Ukrainian American man volunteering at the border.Title 42 grants exceptions to particularly vulnerable asylum seekers, of all nationalities, but on a case-by-case basis.Fedoryshyn explained many Ukrainian refugees who fled to Mexico who are not considered either financially or medically vulnerable enough may soon face the challenge of returning to Europe. Fedoryshyn and other border volunteers are working with both Mexico and United States government entities with the hope to usher Ukrainian refugees to U.S. Embassies.Title 42 has been used to turn away 1.7 million people at the border during the pandemic, according to the CDC.
