It has been a very active start to Saturday morning. We have had numerous Severe Thunderstorm Warnings along with a few Tornado Warnings. A Tornado Watch is set to expire at 10 AM but may be allowed to expire earlier.
Hundreds of storm reports have been reported across a large portion of the region due to the massive, wide-reaching storm system. Some damage reports have come through in Indiana, most of which are related to tree damage. However, there may be a need for the National Weather Service to survey areas near Mecca in Parke County and Loogootee in Daviess County due to potential tornado activity.
In the Deep South, a high risk has been issued by the Storm Prediction Center for today over parts of Mississippi and Alabama, where there is a high probability of strong, long-tracked tornadoes.
The primary storm threat is winding down for central Indiana Saturday morning. We will keep periods of rain into the afternoon and evening, with the heaviest rainfall expected in our eastern-southeastern counties. A few more thunderstorms are possible, and some gusty storms could occur.
Outside of thunderstorm activity, we remain very windy today. A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM, with gusts up to 50 mph possible. The colder air will move in tomorrow, with high temperatures dropping to the mid-40s. We may even see a light wintry mix early in the day on Sunday.
The cooldown is brief, though, as we’ll get back to sunshine and temperatures climbing near 60°F for Saint Patrick’s Day on Monday. We have another couple of days next week when we could reach 70°F before another storm system brings us rain, storms, and a big cooldown.
