PLAINFIELD, Ind. — One dinner left a Plainfield family with a bad aftertaste. They’re dealing with a menu of problems after an Uber Eats driver delivered damage to their garage door.
Wednesday evening, Brock Hardisty and his dad spent just $18 on getting a meal delivered. At around 9:30 p.m., the Chevy Sedan delivering the food was supposed to arrive.
“We’re sitting in the living room watching TV, and we hear this loud crash,” said Hardisty. “We were a little, you know, rattled, like what in the world was that?”
When Hardisty went outside, he saw a dented garage door and their Yamato hibachi dinner.
“My food was sitting there, which was a great thing, and the car and the driver were gone,” said Hardisty. “He’s just clearly bailed out and taken off.”
He filed a police report immediately after to find the driver who fled the scene and now is assessing the damage.
“We had a repair tech come out last night and he quoted us at $2,626 to fix this, which is a lot more than I was even expecting,” he said.
Hardisty said he’s spent several hours dealing with Uber on who will cover the costs.
“Someone from Uber corporate, their safety team reached out, they took my story, you know, they seem concerned, they said that they would follow up with insurance and everything else,” he said. “An hour later, they emailed and they’re basically like, ‘Sorry, we can’t, we can’t help you.’”
Hardisty said he doesn’t want to lower the Uber score for the driver, but just get the garage door repaired as quickly as possible.
“I understand that things happen, and that’s why I feel like Uber as a company should really step up and understand these drivers are working really hard for us, we’re going to cover them when mistakes naturally happen,” he said.
We did reach out to Uber about this situation. Following the interview with Hardisty, we received this response from the company:
“This is not the experience we want people to have when using Uber Eats. We have been in touch with the user, and have removed the delivery person’s access to the platform while we look into this matter.”
Hardisty also confirmed with us after the interview that Uber’s insurance company got in touch with him, but there are no guarantees at this time that he will receive compensation.
Plainfield Police added they hope to have this case closed soon.
Law enforcement warns people if they ever find themselves in a situation like this to make a police report and let them handle it from there.
