The Biden administration recently proposed tariff increases on goods entering the country from China. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative will make its final determination later this month (Aug. 2024).
In May 2024, the administration announced plans to raise Section 301 tariff rates on select goods from China, including electric vehicles, solar cells, and semiconductors. Supply Chain Dive reports that the White House’s reasoning for increasing the duties was to improve America’s competitive standing in the clean energy and technology sector, a major Biden administration focus.
During the recent comment period, the National Retail Federation said the tariff increases would lead to further price increases for U.S. companies and potential retaliation by China against U.S. exports. The National Association of Manufacturers said the tariff increases were “not sufficient” to offset unfair trade practices outside the U.S. Several legislators said beyond the domestic impact, the increases could also negatively affect operations at U.S. ports.
