Two sea turtles are back in their natural habitat. The two loggerhead turtles, Genie and Margoi, had been staying at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center — a center devoted to the study, care and rehabilitation of sea turtles — for just under a year before they were released back into the ocean on Friday.Genie had been injured in a boat strike. The center helped reconstruct her beak and got her back to eating on her own. Margoi arrived with barnacle growth on her shell. She is now back to full health.”It’s a bittersweet moment to release them, because they are going back home. They don’t belong in a tank in a hospital bed, they belong in the ocean,” said Michelle Kaylor with the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. This was the organization’s first public sea turtle release since 2019.
