Sarah Matthews worked as President Donald Trump’s deputy press secretary and will testify publicly to the House Select Committee on January 6th activities in one of the upcoming hearings. The next hearing is set for Tuesday, July 12th. Matthews worked in the Trump administration until the night of January 6th, when she resigned due to being “deeply disturbed.” More recently and more compellingly, Matthews recently supported Cassidy Hutchinson in a tweet and warned that anyone trying to discredit Hutchinson is doing so only because Hutchinson’s testimony was so damning and it “scares” them.
According to CNN:
Matthews resigned the night of January 6, 2021, saying in a statement that she was honored to serve in then-President Donald Trump’s administration but “was deeply disturbed by what I saw.” She added: “Our nation needs a peaceful transfer of power.”
More interestingly:
After another former Trump White house aide, Cassidy Hutchinson, publicly testified before the committee last week, Matthews tweeted: “Anyone downplaying Cassidy Hutchinson’s role or her access in the West Wing either doesn’t understand how the Trump (White House) worked or is attempting to discredit her because they’re scared of how damning this testimony is.”
That is surely a tweet that piqued the Select Committee’s interest, though we’re sure that they’ve heard Matthews’s testimony before. Perhaps she wants to add new details now, in support of Hutchinson. It would be very typical of the Committee to lean back on some of the momenta it gained during the stunning Hutchinson hearing which seemed to cause a paradigm shift among Washington power players regarding whether Trump should face criminal charges.
The announcement also leads to one very obvious question. Matthews was the Trump administration’s “deputy” press secretary. Where is the press secretary in all of this, Kayleigh McEnany? Matthews would not have reported to Kayleigh, they would both report to the Communications Director. But it would seem as though the people around Kayleigh are scrambling to get their stories out and straight before someone else proves they either lied in their earlier testimony or conveniently forgot some key details.
Will Kayleigh revise her testimony? Will she offer up her own damning testimony? It would seem like the natural move to make to legally protect herself. However, unlike Matthews – who can utilize the hearings to fully protect herself without risk, Kayleigh has a six to seven-figure contract with Fox News to protect, and testimony aligning with Cassidy Hutchinson and Sarah Matthews would not please the regular Fox News viewer. It will be fascinating to hear Matthews’s description of the days leading up to Jan. 6th, what led to her resignation, and what she might or might not have said to Trump and Kayleigh McEnany.
America will tune it, even more so than before.
