On Friday, President Donald Trump announced chose failed senatorial candidate Mark Brnovich to be the next U.S. ambassador to Serbia.
“Mark is a proud veteran of the Army National Guard,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “As the son of refugees who fled communism, Mark will be a strong advocate for freedom.”
Brnovich, whose parents are Serbian, served two terms as Arizona’s Attorney General before falling short in the 2022 Republican Senate Primary. Brnovich came in third in the 6-way race, finishing behind Blake Masters and Jim Lamon.
The Brnovich choice surprised many Arizona politicos, who noted that Brnovich was relatively invisible as a Trump supporter, was not a notable donor or bundler for the Trump campaign, and has no particular background in international diplomacy. “Brno doesn’t check any of usual boxes so he must have someone well placed championing him in Trump world,” said one such politico.
