SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A local senior living community is encouraging residents to stay active.

A trio of residents from Touchmark at All Saints made the trip to Great Bear Ski Valley Friday for a hike.

“Residents are coming out here today to hopefully move and use new muscles that we don’t typically use,” Touchmark Resident Services Director Andi Husman said.

Andi Husman is the resident services director. She says the hike is part of National Active Aging Week, though activities don’t end with the week.

“Through all of our programming, health and fitness, our life enrichment activities, we do have a range of different programming for residents to stay active and engaged all throughout the year,” Husman said.

The residents have already played pickleball and hit golf balls this week, and Husman says you can’t overstate the importance of keeping seniors on the go.

“Active Aging isn’t just about moving your body, it’s also keeping your mind engaged as well. If you want to stay active, you have to be active and you do that by staying engaged,” Husman said.

“You’ve heard about growing old gracefully, well we’ve really tried to do that this week,” Touchmark resident Sharon Adams said.

Sharon Adams moved from California and has been a resident of Touchmark for more than two years. She says if you don’t stay active, you’re going to get old too quickly.

“From my personal preference, I just want to do all the things Touchmark offers us to do and they have a great variety of activities no matter what time of year it is,” Adams said.

As for today’s hike, Adams has one goal…

“Trying to keep up with everyone else, which sometimes gets a little more difficult,” Adams said.

But it’s helping keep this senior happy and healthy.

Active Aging Week ends Sunday, but Touchmark will host a Breast Cancer Honor Walk on October 16th.
