SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — ‘Tis the season for movies in downtown Sioux Falls.
The State Theatre currently sits empty, but it will be hard to find a vacant seat with any movie prior to Christmas.
“We always have something going on, but the holidays definitely hit a lot harder,” State Theatre Executive Director Allison Weiland said.
Executive Director Allison Weiland says December is such a popular time to see movies like A Christmas Story that their Holiday Series is nearly sold out.
“There’s single seats available for some of the movies, some of them sell out really fast. I have people calling in October wanting to know when these holiday movies come on sale,” Weiland said.
The movie lineup is a mix of new and old, ranging from this year’s Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point to the 1946 classic It’s a Wonderful Life.
“There are so many to pick from but you really have to stick with those classics. We see year after year that they sell out and there’s demand, people calling that they want more showings, so I think we’re on the right track,” Weiland said.
The State Theatre itself is also part of the draw.
“There’s definitely demand from the community. They want to come in, they want to use the space, they want to show it off to family and friends and have that shared experience together,” Weiland said.
That includes Weiland’s family.
“I got to bring my daughters to Elf and I kind of forgot my youngest had never seen it before, so she’s laughing along and was really engaging with this movie and I was like ‘oh, this is the first time you’ve seen this’,” Weiland said.
The theater will only get busier as Christmas nears, but the holiday break also means more movies on the schedule.
“Think of us, bring the family, or just swing down for a matinee during that time the kids have off school,” Weiland said.
