INDIANAPOLIS — Thunderstorms rolled through central Indiana late Saturday afternoon.
Beginning around 3:30 p.m., thunderstorm warnings were issued throughout the area. Some of the counties affected were Boone, Hendricks, Marion, Montgomery, Putnam, Hancock, Johnson, Shelby, Rush, Henry and Bartholomew.
Most of the warnings were called off by 5:30 p.m.
National Weather Service projections indicated severe thunderstorms were located on a line 13 miles southwest of Lebanon around 3:25 p.m. The line moved east at 35 mph.
The NWS reported that the storm could have produced hazards like penny-size hail and wind gusts of 70 mph.
At around 4:45p.m., AES Indiana had reported that about 4,768 of its customers across Indianapolis were without power. That number had been reduced to 1,730 by 5:55 p.m.
Duke Energy reported that about 1,000 of its customers across central Indiana were without power as of 5:55 p.m. About 745 Duke energy customers in and around Morristown were experiencing power outages, per the company’s outage map.
In a post on Facebook, the Danville Metropolitan Police Department reported that several downed trees and power lines were spotted across the town. Multiple roadways were completely closed to allow Duke Energy crews to make repairs.
DMPD indicated that power was out from Tennessee Street to County Road 200 East. Stoplights in the area also weren’t functional as of 5:08 p.m.
Police in Danville are encouraging area residents to stay off the roadways and seek alternate routes around downed power lines and trees. DMPD is urging the public to report downed power lines to the Hendricks County Communications Center by calling (317) 839-8700.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office reported similar damage near County Road 800 East. A downed tree forced officials to close Oak Street between Stonegate East Drive and County Road 800 East.
Public police reporting systems also indicated that power lines were down throughout portions of Marion County.
According to a Facebook post from the Greenwood Fire Department, the city’s annual Freedom Festival parade has been canceled because of severe weather. The Spark! parade in Fishers has been postponed to 6:45 p.m., per the city’s parks department.
