AUGUST 5, 2024:
Three men from Fort Pierre have been sentenced (Aug. 5, 2024) in connection with an early morning side-by-side accident in September (Sept. 9, 2023) that killed one man and seriously injured another.
The crash, which happened in a pasture in rural Stanley County, killed 18 year old Hayden Monson of Fort Pierre and severely injured 19 year old Jackson Robbennolt. Robbennolt’s mother works for the Sixth Judicial Circuit, so retired Third Circuit Judge David Gienapp of Madison was brought in to do the sentencing to avoid a conflict.
46 year old Josh Monson pleaded guilty to Furnishing Alcohol to a Minor for buying beer for his son Hayden, who was killed in the accident. Monson was sentenced to 100 days in jail, with 98 suspended.
19 year old Chase Hansen pleaded guilty to Reckless Driving and Possession of Alcohol by a Minor. He was sentenced to 100 days in jail, with 90 suspended.
21 year old Trey Frost pleaded guilty to Furnishing Alcohol to a minor. He was given 30 days in jail, with 25 suspended.
Stanley County State’s Attorney Tom Maher said Hanson’s blood alcohol level was .243 and Frost’s was .143. Additionally, Maher said he believes Hanson was driving the vehicle when the accident happened, but it was Frost’s DNA that was found on the controls.
SEPTEMBER 11, 2023:
An 18-year-old man from Fort Pierre died and three men were injured in a UTV accident early Saturday morning (Sept. 9, 2023) in Stanley County.
Sheriff Brad Rathbun says two 18 year olds, a 19 year old and a 20 year old were riding through a pasture in a side-by-side about one mile west of Fort Pierre when the machine rolled around 1:43am. One of the men was able to call 911, but didn’t know their location.
Rathbun says emergency responders located them around 3:20am. He says 18 year old Hayden Monson, a passenger in the side by side, was dead at the scene. An 18 year old and a 19 year old were taken by AMR ambulance to the hospital in Pierre. The 19 year old was then flown to a hospital in Sioux Falls and is in critical condition. The 20 year old was taken by private vehicle to the hospital in Pierre.
Rathbun says who was driving and other details of the accident are under investigation.
Also responding to the scene were the Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department and Pierre Rescue.
