Confession: Over the past year, I have tried almost all the meal kit services out there. I love the convenience, especially on busy weeknights, and it’s a fun way to experiment with new flavors and ingredients while whipping up a restaurant-quality meal right in my kitchen. But most of the companies I have tried so far tend to have more meat- and seafood-heavy options. While looking for a more vegetarian-friendly service, I came across Green Chef and decided to give it a try. The 100 percent organic brand caters to people with unique dietary needs, from paleo and keto to vegan and vegetarian. Here’s a breakdown of the service and why it’s such a great option for anyone with specific dietary needs.
How Does Green Chef work?
As for the options, Keto + Paleo is perfect for anyone following either of these diet plans since it includes a good mix of meat- and vegetable-packed low-carb meals. Balanced Living is great for family-friendly recipes and low-calorie choices, as well as the standard meat-seafood-veggie box. Lastly, Plant-Powered is ideal for anyone who’s vegan, vegetarian, or just looking to add more greens to their meals.
Prices start at $12.99 per meal for two people, and the per-person price goes down from there based on the number of diners. One meal for a family of four will cost $12.49 per person, while the per-person price is $11.49 when you order for six, and so on. Plus, there an $8.99 shipping charge on every order.
Every week, Green Chef adds a brand new menu, and you must make your selection by Wednesday for your next order. Skipping a week is easy; you simply select the option on the website’s calendar.
What Are Green Chef Meals Like?
As I mentioned earlier, my meals are usually meat- or seafood-heavy with a side of veggies (usually heavily doused in butter or oil … ), so I opted for the Plant-Powered meal plan. I was excited to incorporate more greens into my diet and try new vegetables and flavors that I usually avoid. My first delivery included three meals: a Chickpea Salad Sandwich, Butternut Squash Chili, and Creamy Mushroom Penne. These are meals I would usually prepare with either chicken, beef, or shrimp, so the green alternatives definitely sounded enticing.
Once my package arrived, everything was neatly packed and encased with dry ice to keep ingredients fresh. Each meal’s supplies were carefully wrapped in a brown bag with a recipe card that had detailed pictures and step-by-step instructions. Most of the recipes required 40 minutes or less to prepare, and I truly appreciated that every single component was included (even a single peeled garlic clove!), except for pantry staples like oil, butter, salt, and pepper. As for the ingredients themselves, everything is sustainably sourced, organic, and pre-measured to avoid waste.
What I Like About Green Chef
Unlike other meal subscription services, Green Chef has a lot more choices for anyone following certain dietary restrictions. For instance, the brand’s selection of vegetarian, vegan, and plant-based options is simply incredible. Within just one week of subscribing to the service, I had already tried foods that I may not have made otherwise. I also have to call out that the chef-crafted recipes are so easy to follow. I never stumbled, and the results were always delicious. When I have experimented with vegan recipes in the past, it’s always been hit-or-miss, but that wasn’t the case with Green Chef.
One of my favorite meals so far has been the Chickpea Salad Sandwich. The roasted carrots were some of the best I have ever tasted (props to the yellow curry powder), and the chickpea salad itself had a nice crunch thanks to a smattering of chopped walnuts and dried cranberries, all accented with a lovely lemon aioli dressing. The end result was fresh, delicious, and surprisingly comforting. Although Green Chef doesn’t repeat the same recipes very often, I will definitely order it again if it’s ever available.
Will I Use Green Chef Again?
Absolutely! Meal subscription services are one of my favorite ways to expand my food repertoire while still reaping the benefits of home-cooked meals. And with Green Chef, there’s the added benefit of getting to enjoy a vast number of plant-based meals. The service is also financially beneficial in the long run since I no longer have to buy a huge jar of lemon aioli or another specialty ingredient, only to end up using it for one single recipe. Everything is carefully portioned out, so you don’t have to worry about half of that butternut squash rotting away on your refrigerator shelf.
Since I love to cook, I’m always in favor of using fresh produce to whip up a meal from scratch. But the biggest benefit so far has been the saved trips to the grocery store. I no longer have to worry about getting out of the house to go to a crowded store just to hunt for a single ingredient. And for that benefit alone, I’m going to continue to subscribe.
