Along with being vegan, this bag is made with all sorts of sustainable features. The suede used in the design is vegan eco-suede and the design is completely nickel-free. Bio-based certified cactus leather and apple leather were used to make this bag. It’s very hard to tell this plant-based leather from the animal-based alternative that has been used by luxury handbag makers for decades.

Moreover, there are many reasons why environmental and animal rights activists oppose the practice of wearing animal leathers. First, animals are tortured, mutilated and mistreated during the process of removing the skin. Second, those skins are treated with many different chemicals that are toxic to you and to the planet, stuff like coal and tar, oils, and even stuff made with cyanide. Meanwhile, most processed leather you find in fashion is chrome-tanned. Any and all waste that contains chromium is hazardous, according to the EPA. The CDC found that it was directly responsible for cases of leukemia and some studies suggest that its presence causes cancer risk to rise 20% to 50%.

Tanneries release a lot of crappy junk into the air and the water to transport animals and animal skins, not to mention all the stuff they do to treat those skins. Plant-based leathers, by contrast, do not require all this chemical processing. That’s why this bag is important and why the world is paying attention.
