SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — If you have thought about adopting a pet, now is the time.
The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is currently at full capacity.

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society needs you.

“This shelter is at capacity. We need adopters this weekend to come in and help us clear out kennels so that we have room for more animals to come in. We are expecting an influx of animals due to the Fourth of July weekend. We see a lot of strays this weekend, so we need kennel space in order to help those animals out,” community outreach director Dana Konzem said.

There’s no need to be stressed about the adoption process as the shelter makes it simple and easy to follow.

“You just come out to the shelter; you’ll fill out one sheet of paper. So, it’s very easy. You’ll have a short conversation with our adopters to see what animals match the personality that you’re looking for in an animal,” Konzem said. “And then you can adopt same day. If you have a dog at home, we do ask that you bring your dog with so we can do a staff led introduction to make sure that they get along before they go home together. If you’re working on the cat, leave them at home. Leave your cats at home.”

If you can’t adopt there are other ways that you can try and help the shelter and meet animals like Troy.

“The best thing to do if you can’t adopt today is actually go on to our social media, onto our website and share animals,” Konzem said. “Help us find animals a home. Contact your friends and family that have been interested in adopting and just get the word out there that we need more adopters. You can also support us by making a donation on our website.”

Not only do you help the shelter out, you also start the beginning of a journey with your new companion.

“I personally have adopted many animals from the shelter. It’s an amazing feeling to have a new family member. It’s a new adventure. It’s just it’s so fun to add to your family,” Konzem said.
