Remember the baked chip craze, when all the major chip companies released their version of baked chips with big, splashy marketing all at the same time? Meanwhile, Pringles just sort of laughed. They’ve always been baked. That’s a lot like the story of Nassimi fabrics. Many textile makers are thinking about creating PFAS-free fabrics for the first time. But Nassimi has used PFAS-free fabrics a long, long time ago. Now, this industry leader is choosing to eradicate all PFAS from all their textiles.

PFAS, per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, are used often in fabrics. They are so toxic, they’ve been the target of legislation in some states.

PFAS are everywhere and the FDA has only recently taken steps to start protecting people from their harmful effects. The EPA has proposed nationwide limits on the amount of PFAS allowed in drinking water. PFAS make their way into the drinking water because they are used over-abundantly in food packaging, nonstick pans, waterproof clothing and other everyday items. They’re even used as firefighting foam, in some places.
Nassimi was the first company to make phthalate-free faux leather in the 2010s and removed flame-retardant chemicals from upholster materials in 2017. The majority of products made by Nassimi have already been PFAS-free. The last of Nassimi’s textile lines have been reformulated to be PFAS-free as a big step in the company’s commitment to stop using these chemicals altogether. These dangerous fluorocarbons have been found to be harmful to the health of humans and animals.
Additionally, these fabric fluorocarbons are commonly used to give fabrics stain resistance. Nassimi has invented the Supreen liquid barrier to provide stain resistance without using PFAS. This is a silicone-based stain repellent that embeds itself into the fibers of textiles to create a layer of protection.
The fashion and fabrics industries have drawn criticism for using toxic chemicals and other practices that are ultimately harmful to the environment. Companies like Nassimi are leading by example and showing how possible it is to create products that are safe for humans and safe for the world.
