San Diego Comic-Con returned in force this year, with exciting announcements about Dungeons & Dragons, Marvel, DC and every franchise in between. The in-person panels have been packed with news, tearful reunions — and farewells — and oh so many trailers. Luckily, you don’t have be seated at Hall H to get your first looks at The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power or Black Panther: Wakanda Forever — Polygon has put together a running list of the most eye-opening trailers from SDCC 2022, which we’ll be updating throughout the weekend.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
Comic-Con is always a weekend filled with big news and unexpected announcements, but perhaps one of the happier surprises to come out of the event is how great the upcoming D&D movie looks. The first trailer for Honor Among Thieves is packed with everything that we love about Dungeons & Dragons and Chris “The Best Chris” Pine.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
The more Amazon shows of us of Rings of Power, the more excited we’re getting for the Lord of the Rings prequel series. The latest trailer gives us an even better look at Middle-earth during the Second Age, including where the show will find the dwarves, elves, hobbits, and humans. And, oh yeah, it also maybe, possibly, could have given us our first look at Sauron.
The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead returns this October to wrap up the series after 11 bloody seasons. Ahead of the show’s final eight episodes, AMC released a new trailer that sets up what’s to come — and it’s not looking too great for our heroes. Then again, would we really have expected otherwise?
Tales of the Walking Dead
Tales of the Walking Dead is the third spinoff of the zombie drama, but the first one to break from the formula and embrace anthology storytelling. Every episode of the AMC series will tell a standalone tale and primarily center around new characters. Based on this trailer, Tales of the Walking Dead is embracing the freedom of the format, giving us tones and tales we haven’t seen in this universe before.
I Am Groot
The latest Marvel show to sprout on Disney Plus, I Am Groot follows Baby Groot (voiced once again by Vin Diesel) as he gets into all kinds of adorable adventures on a planet filled with even teenier creatures. The first full trailer shows Baby Groot embracing his awesomeness, and while there’s no sign of Rocket Raccoon, the fact that Bradley Cooper is reprising the role means we can expect a family reunion when this five-short series debuts in August.
Teen Wolf: The Movie
An early highlight of SDCC 2022, the Teen Wolf: The Movie trailer took fans back to Beacon Hills, the site of so much otherworldly feuding and flesh-and-blood crushes. Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) is back, as expected, so the real surprise is the return of Allison Argent, whose death in season three remains shocking after all this time. At the panel, Teen Wolf creator Jeff Davis said the movie would provide an “emotional ending” to his supernatural drama.
National Treasure: Edge of History
The wait for more National Treasure is over — but instead of a third film starring Nicolas Cage, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is pivoting to the small screen with Edge of History, a more “youthful” take on the franchise. The first teaser for the series, which comprises 10 episodes, introduces us to the new face of treasure hunting: Lisette Olivera as Jess Morales.
The Dragon Prince
After a three-year absence, Netflix’s The Dragon Prince returned with a compelling first look at season four. Instead of a barrage of scenes, this trailer focuses on what seems to be the opening scenes of the new season, which premieres this winter.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero
It’s time for Piccolo and Gohan to take the Dragon Ball franchise under their wings, as the new dubbed trailer for the upcoming movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero dropped. The second movie in the Dragon Ball Super series, it is written by original series creator Akira Toriyama.
John Wick 4
What more in life can you ask for than Keanu Reeves and Donnie Yen fighting with both knives and swords? Not much, but John Wick 4 is here to give you that and more. With a sprawling cast filled to the brim with action luminaries, one of the world’s premiere action franchises returns early 2023 with the last thrilling installment.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
One of our favorite found families is back in the first Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer — though, from the sound of Shazam’s (Zachary Levi) complaints to Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) pediatrician, things aren’t exactly super. There’s growing division among the super-siblings, which will only be made worse by the arrival of the sequel’s villains: the Daughters of Atlas, played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler (West Side Story). The cheeky trailer includes nods to everything from Annabelle to Starro, and was even more electrifying than the arrival of Dwayne Johnson in his Black Adam costume.
Black Adam
Dwayne Johnson embraces his dark side in the latest trailer for Black Adam, in theaters Oct. 21. “Born out of rage,” the character intones as lightning flickers all around him — a solid line, one that sets up the antihero’s arc in his standalone film that nonetheless includes several members of the Justice Society.
Star Trek: Picard season 3 teaser
The Picard panel at SDCC 2022 was an emotional affair, as it previewed the final season of the Star Trek series. Showrunner Alex Kurtzman said season 3 acts is essentially one last The Next Generation movie, which the character-portrait teaser backs up with members of the TNG crew appearing alongside the Picard team.
Star Trek: Lower Decks season 3 teaser
The season three teaser for Star Trek: Lower Decks promises a “search for justice,” but not without breaking some stuff. In addition to seeing the U.S.S. Cerritos gang back together (sort of), we also spied Klingon admiral Martok of Deep Space Nine. We can expect more DS9 cameos in season three, which will also feature K’ranch, a Kromsapiod who was inspired by Tosk.
Batwheels
Batwheels, four-wheeled fighters of crime, are coming to Cartoonito on Sept. 17 (also known as Batman Day) with a half-hour special that explores their origin story. The cast of the animated series includes Ethan Hawke as Batman, Jacob Bertand as Bam the Batmobile, Gina Rodriguez as Catwoman, and Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as Snowy the Snowcrawler.
The Sandman
The latest trailer for Netflix’s The Sandman gives fans face time with virtually every character in this Neil Gaiman adaptation, including Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, looking absolutely resplendent as a ruler in Hell. This adaptation languished in production limbo, but as the trailer puts it, “Dreams don’t f-cking die.”
Mythic Quest season 3
Apple TV’s workplace comedy set at a video game studio, created by Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney returns this fall. The teaser features new jokes about the metaverse, a new cast member in Joe Manganiello, and tanks, apparently!
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law
Tatiana Maslany stars as Jennifer Walters, a tall, green, super-strong attorney. Mark Ruffalo will be in the show, and both Charlie Cox and Tim Roth will reprise their roles as Daredevil and Abomination, respectively.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
The long-awaited sequel to Black Panther from director Ryan Coogler will end Phase 4 of the MCU (here are the officially announced schedules of Phases 5 and 6, by the way) and introduce MCU audiences to Namor and Riri Williams.
