SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A Wagner teen described as a youth by the Attorney General was sentenced to 20 years in prison in connection with the 2023 stabbing death of a teen, 16, in Wagner.

Gabe Montgomery, 16, had pleaded guilty to a first-degree manslaughter charge. Montgomery will serve part of his term in a juvenile placement center operated by the South Dakota Department of Corrections until he turns 18, according to a news release from the Attorney General’s office. Montgomery will then be moved into an adult prison.

Montgomery was sentenced to 50 years but 30 of those were suspended.

In the news release, AG Marty Jackley describes Montgomery as a “youth” but said the seriousness of the charge justified trying him in court as an adult.

The fight incident in Wagner happened on April 10, 2023.
