SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Friday’s global cyber outage left a lot of weekend travel plans up in the air for people flying in and out of Sioux Falls.
Frustrated fliers inside the terminal were waiting and wondering when they would finally be able to arrive at their destinations.
Washington High School senior Naomi Lofano is heading to a Best Buddies leadership camp in Indiana. But a delay in her connecting flight has left her an unhappy camper.
“I’d be very sad because I’ve been very excited to go,” Naomi said.
Mom is reluctant to send her daughter off if it only means more delays along the way.
“Do you leave your 17-year-old child sitting in an airport four hours away and let them sit there and okay, what point do you go pick them up and say sorry, you missed it,” Kimberlie Lofano said.
Many people were sitting for hours at the terminal waiting on fixes to the outage. They’re grateful that at least some technology was working to pass the time.
“Just watching TikTok playing on my phone,” (nods) Macey Dreeszen of Sioux City, IA said.
Two college students from Sioux Falls were unable board their flight to Nashville to attend a weekend bachelor party.
“Yeah, we’re pretty bummed-out because this is a trip that we had scheduled for a few months and it was really unfortunate,” USD student Gio Oromo said.
Many of the air travelers we spoke with say they’re dismayed that a cyber outage can have such a far-reaching impact across the globe.
“So it’s kind of scary to think that we depend on this so much and for it to go down like this,” Kimberlie said.
“Usually, the flight just gets delayed. This one got totally canceled. We’re supposed to get a refund and some money back, so hopefully, that gets through pretty soon,” SDSU student Landon Dahmen said.
Some flights started getting cleared for takeoff by mid-morning. The hours-long delay ended for some stranded travelers. For others, the wait goes on.
