SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) —While you may not think of burgers when you think of the Cattitude Cafe, the owner has decided to throw their hat in the ring for this year’s Burger Battle.
“This is actually our first year competing in the burger battle. We’re super excited to be a part of it,” Cattitude Cafe owner Heather Wendlandt said.
However, they aren’t serving up a beef-based burger.
“Our burger’s called the Ahi Tuna Burger. It is, of course, a tuna patty instead of the traditional beef burger. And then we’ve got some pickled slaw, a little spicy mayo, and it is on a jalapeno bun, of course, supplied from Bread Smith here, local bread place in town,” Wendlandt said.
All of this alongside the biggest year yet for the Burger Battle competition.
“We’ve got 40 participants this year, which is another record, I believe last year we were at 37. So obviously there’s been a few new businesses that have opened and just more people always wanting to participate,” DTSF Marketing Manager Jeb Cooper said.
Not only do the burgers bring an influx of foot traffic to downtown Sioux Falls, this interest also provides a boost during one of the slower months of the year for restaurants.
“Last year, I believe we sold 75,000 burgers over the month of January, which equates to a $2.9 million economic impact,” Cooper said.
Helping bring people together, with a big bite.
“We’re going to be serving the burger all day, every day. So whether you’re coming for breakfast, lunch or dinner, make Cattitude one of your stops,” Wendlandt said.
The winner will receive a trophy. And this year, there’s more: a traveling pro wrestling-style belt that will go to the kitchen staff of whomever sells the most burgers in the month of January to congratulate them and thank them for all the work they do in the service industry.
DTSF’s goal for this year’s burger battle is to jump over 3 million dollars in economic impact for January.
