RICHMOND, Ind. — The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man who was wanted on a felony warrant on Sunday with assistance from a SWAT team.
According to a press release, deputies began conducting surveillance on a residence in the 1100 block of Sylvan Nook Drive in Richmond early Sunday morning. Deputies started monitoring the home because they had received an anonymous tip that indicated Stewart Guthrie may reside there.
Guthrie was wanted for unlawful carrying of a handgun — a Level 5 Felony.
As their investigation continued, WCSO deputies learned Guthrie was in the residence’s basement and possibly armed with a gun. Once they obtained that information, deputies helped evacuate the home’s other residents and requested assistance from the Richmond Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team.
The SWAT team tried to negotiate with Guthrie, but he was uncooperative. Law enforcement eventually entered the home and found Guthrie hiding in a basement closet.
Police confirmed Guthrie was taken into custody without incident. No civilians or police officers were injured during WCSO’s investigation of Guthrie.
“This incident highlights the importance of teamwork and the rigorous training of our SWAT team,” RPD Chief Kyle Weatherly wrote in a prepared statement. “Their ability to resolve a potentially dangerous situation without injuries speaks volumes about their skill and dedication. We are also grateful to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office for utilizing this partnership to keep our community safe.”
