INDIANAPOLIS – A disturbance on the near west side led to a standoff on Wednesday that resulted in a nearby school canceling classes.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded around 7 a.m. to a home in the 1100 block of N. Belmont Avenue.
SWAT personnel were at the scene. The location is across the street from Matchbook Learning Wendell Phillips School 63. The school has canceled classes for the day.
The school sent a statement:
The situation began prior to school starting. The building has been closed for the day per IMPD guidance but all staff & students are safe. Students who were already on the way to school whose parents were not reached yet have been relocated with staff to our community partner’s site, Victory in the City. We are very thankful for the rapid support and assistance given by Victory in the City, IMPD, and IPS. Huge thanks to them for helping to ensure our safety and to making the day as smooth as possible for our students & staff.

Video showed a man yelling at police officers, who responded by setting off a loud noise that drove the man back inside the house.
Police used a bullhorn urging the man to come out and warning him they would come through the front door.
This is a developing story.
