INDIANAPOLIS — An abandoned SUV plunged into the water after an attempted recovery effort Monday morning on the near northwest side.
Indianapolis Metropolitan police responded to a call around 6:45 a.m. about a vehicle on the ice near Riverside Park.
Officers with IMPD and the Department of Natural Resources determined no one was inside the vehicle and called for assistance from the Indianapolis Fire Department Dive Team.
Divers confirmed there were no occupants in the vehicle, according to Bryan Fleck, the dive team commander for IFD.
Crews tried to recover the vehicle from the ice, but the ice was too thick and the water too deep. They eventually determined it was too dangerous to pull the vehicle out of the water, Fleck said.
The vehicle eventually became submerged. Fleck said recovery teams will come back out when the ice thaws and conditions are safe.
Fleck cautioned anyone against going out on the ice, saying it was too dangerous and unpredictable.
The incident remains under investigation.
