INDIANAPOLIS — A suspect is under arrest after police said a stolen ambulance crashed into an innocent bystander’s vehicle on the city’s east side.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Indianapolis EMS ambulance was stolen near 21st Street and North Shadeland Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The ambulance had been unoccupied and parked outside a nearby business when a suspect hopped in and stole the vehicle.

Not long after reportedly committing the crime, the suspect struck an innocent bystander’s vehicle on Arlington Avenue while driving the stolen ambulance. The accused thief then ditched the damaged ambulance and fled on foot before being caught by pursuing officers in the 2400 block of Arlington Avenue.

Photographs show the stolen IEMS ambulance suffered damage as a result of the collision. A crack was visible on the windshield and the driver’s side front tire was blown out — the rim bent and crumbled.

Police did not say if the ambulance was left unlocked or running at the time of the theft.

No injuries were reported in the crash involving the stolen ambulance, police said.

At this time, no additional details have been released about this incident.
