SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — America is two years away from its 250th anniversary, and to get ready for the celebration, the South Dakota Society Daughters of the American Revolution are touring the state with an exhibit that tells the story of the Revolutionary War.

Inside the Table Ministry at the South Dakota Military Heritage Alliance, you can learn about what life was like during the American Revolution.

“What were the people thinking? What did they have? What were their experiences at that time? Many of us don’t realize what they were going through, and this exhibit shares that with us,” State Regent for South Dakota Society Daughters of American Revolution Katherine Tarrell said.

The exhibit is interactive. While you visit, you can do a scavenger hunt, write letters to veterans on the next Midwest Honor Flight, read the information presented on the banners or sit down and enjoy the videos at each kiosk.

“It gets people interested. Otherwise, you go to something and you’re just told something. It’s not as much fun as going and being able to play around with the computers a little bit and learn a little bit more,” Tarrel said,

You can learn about some well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, but the exhibit also highlights some people you may have never heard of.

“It’s the little people, or the lesser-known people would be a better way of saying, that are around them who work every bit as hard to achieve the goals. They just don’t get the glory, but they’re every bit as essential,” visitor Lee Lewis said.

And it’s all to help visitors understand how the events of the past affect the present day.

“It’s very important to understand what happened in our history and how it shaped the world that we live in today,” Lewis said.

Monday is the last day you can visit the exhibit in Sioux Falls, but it will be available in Pierre and Rapid City later this month.
