SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — If your list of New Year’s resolutions includes being more active, Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation has an event to help you stay on track with your goals.

Riverdale Park is quiet this morning but will see more than its share of foot traffic during Saturday’s Frosty Fun Run.

“We have various different lengths, either 5K or a 10K, so you kind of choose your own adventure of how much exercising you want to do to kick off the year,” Recreation Program Coordinator Eric Saathoff said.

The event is open to people of all ages, with participants running or walking the path along the Big Sioux River.

“We think it’s a great opportunity. A, you’re out with other people, so just the camaraderie of exercising along the recreation trail and also it has been shown that it is a great opportunity to burn more calories during the winter as your metabolism has to work harder,” Saathoff said.

Recreation Program Coordinator Eric Saathoff says they won’t let the cold slow them down.

“We’re really big on recreating year-round here at Sioux Falls Parks & Recreation,” Saathoff said.

“You have to bundle up a little more and I use a gator and that can restrict breathing but totally worth the effort. There’s fewer people out,” Sioux Falls resident Amanda Struse said.

Amanda Struse is out for a run with her 8-year-old rescue dog, Angus, and while she enjoys a little solitude, she also hopes people brave the conditions for this Parks & Rec event.

“I think it’s great, you know in the cold weather to keep up community involvement and get people out and having a good time and just keeping the neighborhood active,” Struse said.

And start the new year off on the right foot.

“Meet some new people, learn about the parks, and enjoy the outdoors,” Saathoff said.

Registration and check-in for the Frosty Fun Run begins at 8:00 Saturday morning at Riverdale Park, followed by the event at 9:00. The cost is $10 per participant. Parks & Rec is also offering a free nature stroll through Arrowhead Park on Saturday, with one-hour walks beginning at 1:00, 2:00, and 3:00 p.m.
