SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — While some people spent their day baking under the sun, a number of kids were doing the same in the kitchen.
8-year-old Anna Aasen enjoys cooking.
“I like making scrambled eggs all by myself for breakfast,” 8-year-old Anna Aasen said.
Anna got her start in the kitchen helping her grandma, but this week she is participating in the kids baking camp at Plum’s Cooking Company.
“Because I love to cook and I want to experience more ways to learn how to cook,” Anna Aasen said.
She’s not the only Aasen in the class, where pizza is on today’s menu.
“Maybe some pineapple. I like pineapple on my pizza, and sausage,” 10-year-old Helen Aasen said.
And when it comes to baking, 10-year-old Helen Aasen is catching on quick.
“I’ve learned that nothing turns out the exact same, and I hope I learn how to be a better baker,” Helen Aasen said.
“There’s just so many kids out there with this passion for cooking. I think we can probably thank the Food Network over the last twenty years,” Plum’s Cooking Company Culinary Director Lizzie Stewart said.
Plum’s offers a variety of camps for a range of ages.
“We’re able to get them in at different stages and teach them confidence in the kitchen, safety in the kitchen, as well as just getting them to be creative and allowing them to play,” Stewart said.
Stewart has been teaching at Plum’s for three years and says the goal is to send the kids home eager to get back into the kitchen.
“My number one goal is to get these kids to feel confident and be excited to go home and maybe cook a meal for their family and their friends, because they just glow,” Stewart said.
And Stewart hopes they’ll keep coming back for more.
“You’re this age now, but this is something you’re going to use your whole life and if it’s something you really love right now, it just takes some practice,” Stewart said.
The kids baking camp runs through Thursday.
Plum’s Cooking Company also has camps for teenagers and classes for adults.
