SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — South Dakota leaders from both sides of the aisle are reacting to the news of President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection.

The South Dakota Democratic Party is now thanking Biden for his leadership while in office. KELOLAND News received this statement from the party’s chair, Shane Merrill:

“The South Dakota Democratic Party thanks President Joe Biden for his strong leadership as our commander-in-chief. President Biden has done more for our country in just four years than most presidents can accomplish in eight. He is one of the greatest leaders of our lifetime. It has been an honor to work alongside his administration to help everyday South Dakotans. We now look ahead to the next steps to elect a new Democratic Presidential nominee and the DNC Convention in Chicago next month”.

KELOLAND News interviewed Dan Ahlers, the executive director of the SD Democratic Party, on Sunday afternoon. His statements will be broadcast on KELOLAND Weekend News.

Democratic party members from South Dakota who are delegated to the Democratic National Convention (DNC) will have a vote in who will be nominated to run in President Joe Biden’s place. Those members are Shane Merrill, Jessica Meyers, Deb Knecht and Dennis Olson

Republicans are also reacting to the news of Biden dropping out. Governor Noem in a post on X stated that this is “the right decision for our nation”.

Senator John Thune echoed similar sentiments. He also made a post on X criticizing democratic leadership.
