Fatal Crashes:

On 08/06/2024 at 4:16 p.m., a 2007 Harley Davidson STC was traveling eastbound on I-90 near mile marker 161. The motorcycle exited the roadway and entered the median. The motorcycle traveled a short distance in the median before overturning. The driver separated from the motorcycle and received fatal injuries. Helmet use remains under investigation.

 

Injury Crashes:

On 08/06/2024 at 12:06 p.m., a 2011 Ford F150 was stopped in the turning lane on Glenn Street in Wall, SD, preparing to make a left turn. A 2022 Indian motorcycle was traveling northbound on Glenn Street. The Ford F150 failed to see the 2022 Indian motorcycle and turned in front of it. The driver and passenger on the 2022 Indian motorcycle were not wearing helmets and received serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the 2011 Ford F150 was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured.

On 08/06/2024 at 3:30 p.m., a 2016 Harley Davidson FLTRX was traveling eastbound on SD 44 near mile marker 120 when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The motorcycle exited the roadway and struck a fence. The driver was not wearing a helmet and received serious, non-life threatening injuries.

On 08/06/22 at 4:11 p.m., a 2022 Jeep Cherokee was attempting to enter South 6th Street from Detroit Avenue in Hot Springs. The 2022 Jeep Cherokee stopped, then began to enter the intersection. The driver of the 2022 Jeep Cherokee failed to see a 2004 Harley Davidson traveling north on South 6th Street. The 2022 Jeep Cherokee entered the intersection in front of the motorcycle. The 2004 Harley Davidson struck the side of the 2022 Jeep Cherokee. The driver of the Harley Davidson was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured.

On 08/06/2024 at 6:51 p.m., a 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 2019 Chevrolet Trax were traveling westbound on US 14A. The 2019 Chevrolet Trax slowed down and stopped to make a left turn. The driver of the 2006 Harley Davidson failed to see the 2019 Chevrolet Trax had stopped.  The 2006 Harley Davidson drove into the rear of the 2019 Chevrolet Trax. The driver and passenger of the 2006 Harley Davidson were wearing helmets but received serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet Trax was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured.

08/06/2024 at 10:31 p.m., a State Trooper stopped a 1999 Kawasaki VN800 for a traffic violation on SD 34 MM 37 in Sturgis. Shortly after stopping, the driver of the 1999 Kawasaki VN800 fled the scene on the motorcycle. A short distance later, the 1999 Kawasaki VN800 left the roadway and crashed in the ditch. The driver was not wearing a helmet and received minor injuries. Charges are pending against the driver.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating these crashes. All information released so far is only preliminary.

Fatal Crashes:

On 08/05/2024 at 10:14 a.m., a 2023 Harley Davidson FLHXSE was traveling southbound on US 85 near mile marker 45. A 2013 Toyota Tacoma was attempting to exit I-90 and enter US 85.  After stopping, the driver of the Toyota entered US 85 in front of the 2023 Harley Davidson as it was approaching. The 2023 Harley Davidson struck the Toyota at the intersection. The driver of the 2023 Harley Davidson received fatal injuries. The driver of the Toyota was uninjured. The driver of the Harley Davidson was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the Toyota was wearing a seatbelt.

 

On 08/05/2024 at 11:26 a.m., a 2003 Harley Davidson Electra Glide was traveling westbound in a group of motorcycles on Nemo Road. A 2015 Harley Davidson Breakout was traveling eastbound in a group of motorcycles. As the motorcycles entered a curve, the driver of the 2015 Harley Davidson Breakout failed to negotiate the curve and crossed the centerline. The driver of the 2003 Harley Davidson attempted to avoid crashing but lost control of his motorcycle in the process and overturned. The driver separated from the motorcycle as it slid in the roadway. The driver of the 2015 Harley Davidson was unable to avoid the other driver in the roadway and struck him, causing the 2015 Harley Davidson Breakout to overturn. The driver of the 2003 Harley Davidson Electra Glide was not wearing a helmet and received fatal injuries. The driver of the 2014 Harley Davidson Breakout was wearing a helmet and received life threatening injuries.

 

Injury Crashes:

On 08/05/2024 at 11:12 a.m., a 2000 Harley Davidson FLHTCI was traveling northbound on Vanocker Canyon Road Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The driver separated from the motorcycle as it entered the ditch, causing serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was wearing a helmet.

On 08/05/2024 at 3:22 p.m., a red 2022 Harley Davidson Road Glide was traveling west on SD 87 when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the motorcycle. The motorcycle overturned and slid across the centerline. A black 2022 Road Glide was traveling east on SD 87. The driver of the black Road Glide was able to stop, prior to the sliding motorcycle striking it. The driver and passenger of the red Road Glide received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the black Road Glide was uninjured. Neither driver nor the passenger was wearing a helmet.

On 08/05/2024 at 4:01 p.m., a 2016 Harley Davidson Touring motorcycle was traveling eastbound on US 16A when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The driver and passenger were separated from the motorcycle as it entered the ditch, causing minor injuries to both occupants. The driver was not wearing a helmet. The passenger was wearing a helmet.

On 08/05/2024 at 5:42 p.m., a 2022 Harley Davidson FLHX was traveling east on Old Hill City Road when the driver failed to negotiate a curve. The driver separated from the motorcycle as it entered the ditch, causing minor injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating these crashes. All information released so far is only preliminary.

On 08/04/2024 at 11:49 a.m., a 1997 Honda Goldwing, pulling a trailer, was traveling eastbound on I-90 near mile marker 172 when the driver lost control of the vehicle. As the vehicle overturned, the trailer became detached from the motorcycle and struck the passenger. The passenger received life-threatening injuries. The driver received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was wearing a helmet. The passenger was not wearing a helmet. Charges are pending against the driver.

On 08/04/2024 at 12:27 p.m., a 2021 Harley Davidson Street Glide was traveling in the turn lane on Lazelle Street in Sturgis. A 2020 Kymco X-Town was in the driving lane. The driver of the Kymco merged into the turn lane and struck the Harley Davidson. The driver of the Kymco separated from his motorcycle and received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Harley Davidson was uninjured. The drivers were not wearing helmets.

On 08/04/2024 at 12:59 p.m., a 2003 Harley Davidson Cruiser was traveling on Rockerville Road near SD 40. The driver failed to negotiate the curve and lost control of the motorcycle. The driver and passenger separated from the motorcycle and received serious non-life-threatening injuries during the crash. Neither the driver nor passenger were wearing helmets.

On 08/04/2024 at 1:02 p.m. a 2011 Harley Davidson was traveling westbound behind a 2012 Harley Davidson on US14A near mile marker 35. As the vehicles were traveling through a curve, the 2011 Harley Davidson attempted to pass but lost control. The 2011 Harley Davidson struck the rear of the 2012 Harley Davidson causing both vehicles to overturn. The driver and passenger of the 2012 Harley Davidson were wearing helmets and received minor injuries. The driver of the 2011 Harley Davidson was not wearing a helmet and receiving serious non-life-threatening injuries.

On 08/04/24 at 2:49 p.m. a 2007 Harley Davidson FLSTN was traveling westbound on US16A near mile marker 55. A 2013 Harley Davidson FLTRU was traveling eastbound at the same location. The driver of the 2007 Harley Davidson failed to negotiate a curve and crossed the centerline, colliding with the 2013 Harley Davidson in the westbound lane. A passenger on the 2013 Harley Davidson received minor injuries during the crash. The driver and passenger of the 2013 Harley Davidson were wearing helmets. The driver of the 2007 Harley Davidson was not wearing a helmet.

On 08/04/2024 at 5:29 p.m., a 2012 Moto Guzzi Griso was traveling near the intersection of Ford Mountain Road and Old Hill City Road. The driver lost control of the motorcycle as they attempted to stop for a posted stop sign. The motorcycle overturned and the driver was separated from the motorcycle. The driver received serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.

Injury Crashes:

At noon on Saturday, the driver of a 2011 Yamaha STR was traveling on US Highway 18, mile marker 20 (seven miles east of Edgemont). The vehicle exited the roadway and overturned. The driver became separated from the motorcycle during the crash. The driver was transported with serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was wearing a helmet.

At 12:20 p.m. on Saturday, the driver of a 2005 Harley Davidson FXDI, pulling a trailer, was exiting I-90 mile near marker 188 (four miles west of Murdo). As the vehicle was exiting, the trailer came unhitched and began dragging on the roadway. The driver lost control of the motorcycle and crashed. The driver was transported by ambulance with minor injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.

At 1:37 p.m. on Saturday, the driver of a 2017 Kia Forte was involved in a crash at the intersection of Junction Avenue and Douglas Street in Sturgis.  The driver was transported with minor injuries. The driver was arrested for DUI at over three times the legal limit. The driver was wearing a seatbelt.

At 3 p.m. on Saturday, the driver of a 2022 Harley Davidson FLXRS was traveling eastbound on US Highway 18 near mile marker 24 (12 miles west of Hot Springs).  A vehicle traveling the same direction in front of the motorcycle slowed down to make a left-hand turn. As the driver of the 2022 Harley Davidson FLXRS attempted to avoid the turning vehicle they lost control of the motorcycle, overturned and then slid a short distance in the roadway.  The driver of the Harley was separated from the motorcycle during the crash. The driver was transported with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was wearing a helmet.

At 4:48 p.m. on Saturday, the driver of a 2012 Harley Davidson was traveling through a curve on US Highway 14A near mile marker 32, (five miles south of Lead) when they saw patrol vehicles nearby. The driver was unsure of the posted speed limit and braked aggressively. The driver lost control of the motorcycle and overturned. The driver separated from the motorcycle and slid into the ditch. The driver was transported with minor injuries. The driver was wearing a helmet.

At 6:27 p.m. on Saturday, the driver of a 2021 Kawasaki ZX14 was traveling on North Angustora Road (eight miles south of Hot Springs) when a deer entered the road. The driver was able to miss the deer by swerving but lost control of the motorcycle in the process. The motorcycle overturned and slid with the driver across the ditch and into a nearby field. The driver was transported with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was wearing a helmet.

At 8:53 p.m. Saturday, the driver of a 2019 Harley Davidson FLHXS was traveling northbound on US Highway 14A near mile marker 45 (three miles north of Deadwood) when a deer ran onto the roadway. The driver was unable to avoid the deer and lost control of the motorcycle as the impact occurred. The driver was separated from the motorcycle as they slid across the roadway. The driver was transported with serious non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.

At 1:52 a.m. Sunday, the driver of a 2018 Harley Davidson FLHTK was traveling westbound on SD Highway 34 in St. Onge. At the same time and location, a 2019 Freightliner towing a 2021 Utility trailer was traveling eastbound. The motorcycle crossed over the center line and entered the eastbound lane striking the semi-tractor. The driver was transported with serious non-life-threating injuries. The driver was not wearing a helmet.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating these crashes.
