The South Dakota Board of Regents (BOR) is proud to announce the launch of the Gateway to Teacher Education undergraduate certificate, a new initiative aimed at providing students across South Dakota with a head start in pursuing a career in K12 teacher education. This program introduces students to the rewarding teaching field while equipping them with essential courses to better prepare them for future goals. This certificate is uniquely positioned to be delivered on campus, online, and through South Dakota’s High School Dual Credit program.
“We are excited to offer this new opportunity to South Dakota’s high school and public university students,” said BOR Executive Director Nathan Lukkes. “The Gateway to Teacher Education certificate not only provides students with an introduction to the teaching profession but also serves as a solid stepping stone towards their academic and career goals in education.”
The Gateway to Teacher Education certificate will serve as a valuable credential for students with a passion for education and a desire to make a difference in the lives of children and the communities of South Dakota. By participating in the program, students will gain insights into the teaching profession and explore various teacher education degrees offered by South Dakota’s public universities. The certificate is stackable with Elementary, Secondary, and Special Education degrees, providing a four-class advantage in required coursework.
“This program not only strengthens the pipeline for educators in our state,” said BOR President Tim Rave, “But also makes quality education more accessible. Thanks to funding provided by the South Dakota Legislature, our high school dual credit students can take these gateway courses at a discounted rate, setting them up for even greater success.”
The Gateway to Teacher Education certificate is open to high school juniors and seniors and public university students across South Dakota who are interested in exploring a career in education. Interested students are encouraged to visit OurDakotaDreams.com to learn more.
