Washington, DC – Main Street Alliance has formed Main Street Action PAC. In this November’s elections, MSA members are engaging in critical state legislative races in Wisconsin—from Viroqua to Mt. Horeb to Deforest.
Last year, small business owners across the state applauded the strong leadership of the State Supreme Court, which overturned maps that had stifled democracy in this state. Although Wisconsin is a toss-up state in the Presidential and statewide elections, expertly gerrymandered maps have cut large parts of the state off from democracy since 2012. With those maps overturned, a new day has dawned in Wisconsin.
That is why Main Street Action PAC and our 2000+ members in Wisconsin are proud to endorse Tara Johnson, Elizabeth Grabe and Sarah Keyeski for the state legislature. This is a historic decision for the Main Street Alliance and the first time the organization has become directly involved in state legislative elections. For over 16 years, Main Street Alliance has focused solely on elevating small business voices in our electoral process. In those 16 years, never has democracy itself been as imperiled as it is today. As such, Main Street Action PAC is rising to meet the urgency of the moment.
Gerrymandered maps have meant that elected officials have been more likely to listen to well-heeled corporate lobbyists in Madison instead of the people back home. We seek to change that.
Recently, Main Street Alliance hosted candidate roundtables in these districts, talking with them about important issues facing Wisconsin small businesses—like Badgercare expansion, capital access, paid family & medical leave, and addressing the high costs and lack of access to quality child care.
“When Main Street Alliance entered Wisconsin I joined immediately because our government impacts every aspect of our daily lives. The only way to have any influence on the legislation that is presented, voted on, and signed into law is to participate in the process. Our elected representatives are chosen by us to represent us; they need to be willing to listen to those directly impacted by the choices they make to ensure the vote they cast will actually, when implemented, have the desired impact on the community. Roundtables like this one are their opportunity to engage directly with multiple voters at one time,” said Corrine Hendrickson, MSA leader.
It was clear in the roundtable discussions that the candidates are focused on the things that matter most to our members.
Over the next 37 days we will work tirelessly to ensure their election to the state legislature.
