A northern Kentucky woman is among the more than 150 people killed in a crowd surge in Seoul, South Korea. Those who knew Anne Gieske are remembering her for her smile and personality. Gieske is the niece of Ohio Congressman Brad Wenstrup. She graduated from Beechwood High School last year and was studying abroad through the University of Kentucky.Anne Gieske worked as a server at Skyline Chili, her manager says she started in high school, and would come back during college breaks all the way up until a couple of months ago when she left for her dream semester abroad in South Korea. Family, friends and co-workers are remembering Gieske, one of two Americans recently killed in South Korea.”She was having a great time. She loved it over there,” said Jody Thompson, general manager.Thompson is the general manager at Skyline Chili in Crescent Springs where Gieske worked. She says Anne was both excited and a little nervous about studying more than 6,000 miles from home.Thompson couldn’t believe the tragic news, “I saw the news and I had sent her a message on Snapchat, just letting her know I was thinking of her and I was hoping that she was safe and that never got opened.”Thompson followed Gieske’s journey through her travel page and even wished her a happy 20th birthday just a few days ago. Former co-worker Marissa Vohl remembers the good times, saying Gieske made work fun. “Just her smile, her welcome, her laugh really could make anybody’s day,” said Vohl.Like Gieske, many employees are Beechwood High School students. She served and sometimes worked the drive thru, Gieske said she just loved helping people. “it’s just so weird to have someone who was so loving, so caring, so kindhearted to pass,” said Vohl. Now those who knew her are working to provide a sense of support. “The worst feeling is that I feel hopeless. There’s nothing I can do to make it go away. I can’t bring her back. I can’t make it better. I can just be here for support,” said Thompson. The store’s general manager says Skyline Chili is working on something special to honor Anne. The final details are not yet in place, but she says they want to do their part in ensuring Anne’s memory lives on.
