SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls is already getting its first taste of snow. As drivers adjust to winter conditions once again, so are Sioux Falls snow crews.
“It was kind of pushed off to Sunday night. So, the crews were brought in Sunday late afternoon, and they worked most of the night and then through the early morning and had all the roads cleared this morning,” Street Operations Manager Dustin Hansen said.
A lot of prep work for the winter months starts in the summer, to make sure the city has everything it needs to keep roads clear.
“We start going through them in August and then it’s just kind of every little thing that we have to do. Contracts, inventory of de-icing material, things of that nature and just making sure the equipment is calibrated and ready to go,” Hansen said. “So, it’s a long span to get everything ready.”
The city’s also reminding drivers to slow down. Sioux Falls Police reported nearly 200 crashes in the last six days, with over half of those last Wednesday.
“There could still be slick spots around the city like that,” Hansen said. “As we’ve seen last week, it turned fairly quickly on us freezing back. So, you always got to be prepared.”
They’re also reminding drivers to give plows enough space, and to move your car when a snow alert is issued.
