SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Will this year’s fireworks display in Sioux Falls fizzle out?
That’s the burning question right now, because the forecast is calling for more rain or thunderstorms.
But organizers say they have a plan in place just in case Mother Nature decides to put on a show of her own.
The fireworks display at the WH Lyon Fairgrounds has been an annual tradition for many families for years.
John Small of Sunny Radio took over the event back in 2020 and formed his non-profit called Sioux Falls Fireworks.
He expects a big crowd and says he has a plan in place when it’s time to leave.
“Here’s what usually happens; fireworks are done and 10,000 people are leaving at the same time, this year we’ve got two things to help with that situation first of all the after party, which is nice so some people will stick around and enjoy some music for awhile and then we also have the Sioux Falls Police Department running the stop lights on 12th Street and on Madison to help people get out,” Small said.
The gates open at 7 p.m. but there’s going to be plenty for people to do with their families before the fireworks show at 10 p.m.
“Before the fireworks, we’ve got music and fun entertainment for the kids, there’s inflatables also the first year of having a juggler who will be juggling,” Small said.
The man in charge of the fireworks says it’ll be spectacular.
“It’s an awesome show, we change it up every year, we always want to beat last year’s as far as the different types of effects and all the new fireworks that come out,” Mike Denning of Epic Sky said.
But the forecast is calling for rain on Thursday.
“Well we need to tell Jay Trobec the weather it can’t rain and if that doesn’t work the good news is we have a plan for Friday so our rain day would be Friday,” Small said.
Either way, people will see a show and Denning is promising a great ending.
“We have a finale and then we have a little bit of a countdown and then the finale,” Denning said.
The event is free along with free parking and there’ll be plenty of food vendors as well.
