SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – The City of Sioux Falls has issued fewer building permits so far this year compared to the last two years. The value of permits is also down, despite multiple high-dollar projects.
At the start of 2024, city leaders anticipated a slow down in construction.
“There are a lot of economic headwinds going on right now and we probably will see that in a softer year in 2024 economically in this community,” Mayor Paul TenHaken said in January.
As we get closer to 2025, that prediction seems to be ringing true. From January through November of this year, the city has issued a total of 5,950 building permits, which is down from the last two years. The value of permits is also down despite some big projects.
This year, Sioux Falls saw the start of 14 builds with a value greater than 10 million dollars. That includes the Sioux Falls One Stop building on the city’s east side with a value of over $71 million, the new Avera on Louise that’s sitting at over $54 million and the new Lifescape Children’s Care Hospital coming in at nearly $30 million.
Despite the lower construction numbers, there are more single-family homes, duplex units and townhouses being built this year compared to last year. Apartment projects, however, are down by 703.
With less construction in 2024, the question now is what will the new year bring?
