Mississippi Today is pleased to announce that Simeon Gates has joined Mississippi Today as a general assignment reporter.

Gates is a Jackson native. She started at Mississippi Today as a summer intern covering a wide variety of topics, including new state laws, education and politics. Her interests include local politics, history and accountability journalism.

“Simeon demonstrated throughout her internship the qualities that Mississippi Today prizes in its journalists – initiative, an inquiring mind and a desire to hold public officials accountable to the state’s taxpayers,” said Debbie Skipper, justice team and special projects editor at Mississippi Today.

Gates recently graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi, where she worked as a student journalist for two years. She now resides in Pearl with her family. In her downtime, she reads about politics and popular culture, makes collages and helps care for her nephew.

“I’ve been a devoted reader of Mississippi Today for years,” Gates said, “and am honored to be joining their newsroom.”
