PINE RIDGE, S.D. (KELO) — The shooting at a Pine Ridge Pow Wow was an isolated event between two individuals and not a mass shooting, according to Oglala Sioux Tribe President Frank Star Comes Out.
One man was shot several times by another man Friday night at the event. The victim was taken to Monument Hospital and is in serious but stable condition.
The suspect was quickly identified and arrested Friday night by Oglala Sioux Tribal Police.
Tribal officials and committee members have decided to resume the Oglala Lakota nation Wacipi, Fair & Rodeo August 3 through August 4.
A prayer ceremony and smudging will take place on the pow wow grounds with Spiritual Leaders in present.
Additional safety measures will be taken at the pow wow including increased security, police, detection devices and lighting. Bureau of Indian Affairs, Indian Health Services and EAP Behavioral Health Services will be on site.
