SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Codington County Sheriff’s office confirms officers responded this week to reports of an assault on a school bus near Henry.

In a news release today Sheriff Brad Howell says the investigation is still active and ongoing. As we shared last night in an exclusive interview, at least three 7th-grade boys say they were beaten on a bus traveling to and from their football practice.

The middle school boys and their parents have come forward to talk about bullying endured on a school bus. It got so bad the boys say they were forced to quit a sport they loved.

“They loosen the seat belts all the way and hit us multiple in the legs, backs, thighs everywhere, I can’t remember how many times I’ve seen my friends being hit and hurt by them seat belts and cleats and its sad to see that happen to my friends,” said Tieson Jenner.

The boy’s parents are concerned the actions by older students crossed the line from bullying to abuse.

“The sheriff had asked us to go to an advocate, at child’s voice, and we did speak with them and they took pictures of the bruises they talked with my son,” said Sarah Dukes.

DCI agents were involved in the investigation of hazing by the Mitchell legion baseball players. In that case the bullying did cross the line and resulted in rape charges. Six players later plead guilty to accessory to a felony. Attorney General Marty Jackley says past investigations of these types of cases shows it starts with parents and the coaches.

“Obviously we need to protect kids and make sure we are sending them in the right direction to focus on sportsman like conduct, sports and to some of the other activities we are starting to see, ” said Jackley.

Jackley says his office would assist if called upon. The Codington County Sheriff says the investigation is on going and appropriate charges will be filed pending the outcome of the investigation.

Dan Swartos the Executive Director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association tells KELOLAND News in an email that Bullying or Hazing has no place in the educational environment, including extracurricular activities.
