SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A whooping cough case has been confirmed by the South Dakota Department of Health for a student in the Sioux Falls School District.
The district sent out an email Thursday saying the student attends Roosevelt High School. The school says that students who had close contact with the ill person received an additional notification.
The school said in the email that “there is no action required, other than to monitor for symptoms and illness.”
Last weekend, cases of whooping cough in the Portland State football team caused the cancelation of a game with the University of South Dakota.
Cases have also been increasing in South Dakota. South Dakota had 55 cases through Sept. 7 compared to 22 at the same time last year.
In an additional letter to parents, the SFSD Health Services Supervisor Molly Satter said whooping cough is a contagious illness spread through the air. Satter said parents should watch kids for any signs or symptoms of a cough illness.
