“I just got done reading the veto message from Governor Evers about Assembly Bill 1. And this is my reaction – ‘What a crock!’
“The Governor created these standards. The Governor criticized Superintendent Underly lowering his academic standards, and now he protects her blatantly political actions. He doesn’t trust the Legislature to defend HIS own standards. That’s fine.
But he’s also not trusting the parents, teachers, and education administrators who want to know, and deserve to know, how their student and school is doing. He has vetoed bills allowing greater transparency in schools – repeatedly. He has vetoed bills saying you can’t teach hate in schools. He has vetoed giving parents more information about their schools.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Throughout his time as Superintendent and Governor, he’s been consistent – he only trusts the education bureaucracy that has showed – even with Underly’s own lower standards – that 7 out of 10 kids can’t read at grade level. Kids graduating from school have to take remedial classes in college to make up for what they aren’t learning under their leadership.
If you want your schools to improve, you now know Governor Evers and Superintendent Jill Underly won’t do it. Instead, they’ll cover it up.
