(MADISON)—Today, Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement regarding President Tump’s recent action to rescind already-approved federal funding that had been going to health services across the state, including Parachute House in the 3rd Senate District:

“The recklessness of President Trump’s chaos in Washington hit our district hard when he announced that his administration is refusing to keep its commitments to maintain federal funding for health services including Peer-Run Respites like the Parachute House on National Avenue which provides peer support in a safe environment for those experiencing mental health crises.

“Nora Hitchcock, the Executive Director of Our Space, which operates the Parachute House was in the State Capitol yesterday, helping legislators understand what strategies would be most helpful to improve access to mental health services in Wisconsin when she received an email informing her that the federal funding Parachute House receives, which they expected to run through June, was being clawed back by the Trump administration.

“The shock that this caused cannot be overstated. At a time when mental health care is so difficult to access across our state, to watch the rug get pulled out from under the individuals and organizations who have devoted themselves to assisting their neighbors in crisis makes me sick.

“In Wisconsin, we look out for our neighbors, and we keep our promises, but these are things that President Trump doesn’t understand. He’s more concerned about tax breaks for his wealthy friends—like Elon Musk—than he is about helping Americans who are struggling.”
