Hi folks! Welcome back to Tammy Tuesdays, our weekly update email on Tammy’s work and the big fights she’s taking on for Wisconsin families.
Tammy knows that there’s more that unites us than divides. She understands that Wisconsin’s middle-class families all want good paying jobs, affordable health care, and the same freedoms their parents and grandparents had.
Read below for highlights of what Tammy worked on this week:
Bolstering Job Training Programs
Everyone should have access to a good paying job, whether they went to college or not. That’s why Tammy is committed to working with Republicans and Democrats alike to build new programs to get our workers trained up, help them find apprenticeship programs, and connect them with a good job that pays the bills.
On Wednesday, Tammy stopped in Menasha to meet with the Fox Valley Workforce Development Board and celebrate the over $4.6 million she secured to expand job training opportunities. This funding will benefit local employers and businesses by expanding opportunities for job seekers to get the necessary training to land a good-paying job and grow Wisconsin’s skilled workforce. Tammy is committed to building a Made in Wisconsin economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top, and is proud to help Wisconsinites gain the education and experience needed for good-paying careers.
Combating the Opioid, Fentanyl, and Heroin Epidemic
The opioid, fentanyl, and heroin epidemic has devastated communities across Wisconsin, and it does not discriminate. It’s in our rural communities, our cities, and our suburbs, and it affects people of all demographics. Tammy is ready to work with anyone willing to come to the table to beat this epidemic because we can’t let it claim any more lives and destroy our communities.
Last week, Tammy met with public safety leaders in Wausau to discuss their efforts to combat the fentanyl epidemic. During the meeting, Tammy heard from local leaders about the impacts of fentanyl and discussed her work to pass the FEND Off Fentanyl Act, which aims to stem the drug’s flow into the U.S. by cracking down on Chinese chemical suppliers and Mexican cartels. Tammy has been at the forefront of the fight against the opioid, fentanyl, and heroin epidemic and is going to keep working to combat this crisis until we rid our communities from this tragic epidemic once and for all.
Expanding Life Saving Health Care
So many Wisconsinites have had their lives touched by the heartbreaking effects of cancer in some way or another. Tammy understands this and believes that in order to save lives, we need to expand access to affordable, lifesaving health care. Recently, Tammy has been working hard to pass bipartisan legislation that stops health insurance companies from increasing out-of-pocket costs for new oral cancer treatment medications. She’s also working to reauthorize the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP), which provides breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services for women who are low-income, uninsured, and do not qualify for Medicaid.
Last Tuesday, Tammy hosted a roundtable discussion with The American Cancer Society Action Network (ACS CAN) Cancer Votes program. The conversation was centered around expanding access to and funding for cancer screenings, treatment, and research. During the event, Tammy signed the “Cancer Promise,” pledging to support cancer research funding, ensuring access to affordable, quality health coverage and ensuring access to cancer prevention services. Tammy will always work hard to make sure that each and every American has access to the lifesaving health care they deserve.
Working with Milwaukee Youth
Tammy is committed to creating opportunities for the next generation of Wisconsinites because she knows that they are the future of our state and our country. Recently, Tammy was joined by Sen. Cory Booker for a roundtable discussion with Milwaukee high school students to discuss critical issues impacting young people. The conversation focused on education and arts funding, job training opportunities, and mental health support. Tammy is taking everything she heard from this productive and essential conversation right back to Washington so that we can keep working to ensure every young Wisconsinite has the opportunity and skills they need to build a stronger future.
Protecting Our Great Lakes
With 35% of Wisconsinites living along the Great Lakes shoreline, and many getting their drinking water from Lake Superior or Lake Michigan, Tammy knows how important our Great Lakes are. And she knows that our communities that live along these shorelines are in dire need of resources to respond to the harmful effects of weather events and climate change.
On Friday, Tammy was proud to announce she secured $3.2 million for a project in Ozaukee County to reduce the impacts of increased flooding and restore habitats for Great Lakes fish populations. This investment, funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act, will reconnect the Lake Michigan tributary, Sucker Creek, to nearby wetlands and floodplains, enhancing flood protection and restoring critical fish habitats. By improving the health of our Great Lakes, this funding not only supports our local ecosystems but also protects our communities from flooding and the infrastructure families and Made in Wisconsin businesses rely on. Tammy is committed to preserving Lake Michigan and our Wisconsin freshwaters for generations to come.
