MADISON- Today, the Democrats on the Joint Legislative Audit Committee wrote to Co-Chair Rob Cowles (R-Green Bay) requesting a comprehensive audit of the Office of Special Counsel led by Michael Gableman. This request comes in light of the over $1 million in taxpayer dollars already spent and, more recently, Gableman stating in a campaign robocall that that Speaker Vos “never wanted a real investigation into the 2020 election in Wisconsin,” and Vos just last night calling Gableman “an embarrassment to the state.” You can read the letter requesting the audit HERE. The Democratic members of the Audit Committee released the following statement:

“The Office of Special Counsel, authorized by Speaker Vos and run by Michael Gableman, appears to be one of the most blatant misappropriations of tax dollars in our state’s history. The fact that the Speaker handed Gableman a blank check to peddle conspiracy theories and lies should alarm every Wisconsinite. This entire sham of an investigation has led to countless questions about how this money was spent. We demand answers.

“The Joint Legislative Audit Committee is tasked with assessing the operations of our state government, where we can find efficiencies, and considering whether taxpayer funds are being misused. The Gableman investigation must be audited to ensure the integrity of our legislative processes moving forward. An audit would draw a line in the sand to stop future legislative leaders from abusing their power like Speaker Vos has done continually since the 2020 election.

“We are calling on Senator Cowles and all our Republican colleagues on the committee to join us in supporting these efforts for a comprehensive audit without delay.”
