Two South Elgin High School students died in a crash early Thursday morning following a collision with a truck at Route 25 and Kenyon Road in Bartlett, police said.
The crash involved a 2002 Honda Civic, occupied by four South Elgin High School students, and a 2007 Mack semi-tractor trailer.
A female passenger in the Civic was pronounced dead at the scene about 7 a.m. and a second female passenger later died at an area hospital, Bartlett police said.
Names of the victims have not been released nor were any details of the crash itself. Route 25 was closed between West Bartlett Road and Graham Road for more than two hours so the police investigation could be conducted, police said.
The Civic’s driver, a third passenger and the male driver of the semi were transported to area hospitals, police said.
One student is listed in critical condition, according to District U-46 Superintendent Suzanne Johnson, who notified district parents and residents of the news in a Facebook message posted shortly before 11 a.m.
“It is with a heavy heart that we write to inform you about a tragic motor vehicle accident that occurred earlier this morning (Aug. 31),” Johnson wrote. “We are deeply saddened to report that the accident involved students from our South Elgin High School community and, tragically, two of our students lost their lives. … Our thoughts, prayers, and most sincere condolences are with the families and loved ones of the students during this incredibly difficult time.
“We understand that this news may be overwhelming and distressing for our students, families, and staff. In light of this, we want to assure you that we have a support system in place to help our students navigate through their feelings and emotions. Our school social workers and counselors are available to provide guidance, a listening ear, and a safe space for students and staff who may want to talk about their thoughts or concerns.”
The Bartlett police investigation remains ongoing. They are being assisted by the Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigative Team (MERIT).
